"I had not been able to see my grandchildren's faces clearly for two years. After the camp in Kiambu, they operated the very next day. I can see everything clearly now. God bless these doctors."
City Eye Foundation
Restoring Sight.
Transforming Lives.
CEH Foundation, through our community outreach programme, provides early intervention measures—such as vision screening and eye treatment, including surgeries—in underserved communities.
City Eye Foundation
CEH Foundation has also commissioned a state-of-the-art, camera-based diabetic screening (Fundus Camera) that is used in the outreach programme for the effective diagnosis of diabetic eye disease.
The new technology assists in the early diagnosis and intervention of diabetic eye disease to prevent needless blindness.
Support CEH Foundation
The community outreach programme is made possible through funds raised by the City Eye Foundation.
You can support CEH Foundation by contributing through:
- Compassion — every patient is treated with dignity and care
- Excellence — world-class clinical standards at every outreach
- Equity — quality eye care is a right, not a privilege
- Accountability — transparent use of every donated shilling

Foundation Milestones
Our outreach programmes
Every programme is delivered by CEH's fellowship-trained ophthalmologists and supported by generous partners.
Cataract Outreaches
Free screening camps at churches, county hospitals and social halls. Identified patients receive subsidised surgical interventions, restoring sight that would otherwise be permanently lost.
Corporate Outreaches
We partner with organisations to bring world-class eye care directly to their staff. On-site screening, eye health education and direct referrals — right at their workplace.
Diabetic Retinopathy Screening
Ongoing screenings at Non-Communicable Disease Clinics using our commissioned Fundus Camera — a non-invasive method to detect diabetic eye disease before it causes blindness.
Community Eye Health Education
Health forums at every outreach camp covering the causes, symptoms and prevention of common eye conditions, empowering communities to protect their sight.

Cataract Outreaches
Our cataract outreaches are held at central community locations — churches, county government hospitals and social halls — making screening accessible to those who cannot travel to the city.
Community members receive free eye screening at the camps. Those identified with cataracts benefit from subsidised surgical interventions, often on the same day or within days.
A cataract is an opacity of the natural eye lens that can lead to blindness if left untreated. It is treatable through a straightforward surgical procedure when caught early.
Our cataract outreaches are made possible through the generous support of the Fred Hollows Foundation and the CEH Foundation. Each camp also includes community eye health awareness forums on causes, symptoms and treatment.
- Free cataract screening for all attendees
- Subsidised surgery arranged within days
- Post-operative follow-up care included
- Health education sessions at every camp
Corporate Outreaches
City Eye Hospital partners with organisations to bring world-class eye care directly to their staff, holding eye health outreaches at their office premises.
During the outreach, staff members receive a comprehensive briefing on CEH's services, on-site eye screening, and treatment where possible. Those needing specialist care are referred to our facilities.
- On-site eye screening for all staff
- Personalised eye health advice
- Prescription glasses referral support
- Group rates for follow-up consultations
- Branded eye health awareness materials
To arrange a corporate outreach for your organisation, contact our team — we work with companies of all sizes.
Diabetic Retinopathy Screening
Our diabetic retinopathy outreach programme operates in partnership with county government health facilities and Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Clinics across Kenya.
All diabetic patients at partner NCD Clinics are screened using our CEH-commissioned Fundus Camera — a non-invasive, highly accurate method for detecting diabetic eye disease at its earliest stages.
Early diagnosis is critical: diabetic eye disease often causes no pain or visible symptoms until significant damage has occurred. When caught early, treatment can prevent blindness entirely.
- Non-invasive Fundus Camera imaging
- Immediate results and counselling
- Urgent referral pathway for those with complications
- Ongoing monitoring for stable patients
- Education on diabetes management and eye health
Community Eye Health Education
Every CEH Foundation outreach camp includes a community eye health education forum. Our ophthalmologists and optometrists engage directly with community members to raise awareness about preventable blindness.
Topics covered include the causes, symptoms and treatment of the most common eye conditions in Kenya:
- Cataracts — what they are and how surgery restores sight
- Glaucoma — the silent cause of blindness, and why early screening matters
- Diabetic retinopathy — protecting sight when living with diabetes
- Refractive errors — when glasses or contact lenses make the difference
- Children's eye health — signs parents should watch for
We distribute printed materials in Swahili and English, and engage community health workers to sustain awareness between camps.
