Paediatric Ophthalmology provides medical and surgical eye care for children under the age of 18.
Your paediatrician or general doctor should check your child’s vision along with the usual paediatric check-ups in the first three years of infancy, as children can be born with eye conditions or may develop them earlier on in life.
Some of the common paediatric eye issues we treat at City Eye Hospital include:
● amblyopia (lazy eye: a poor visual development in one of the child’s eyes)
● strabismus (crossed eye: a child’s eyes do not look in exactly the same direction at the same time)
● myopia (nearsightedness: a child can clearly see objects close up, but those farther away appear blurry)
● hyperopia (farsightedness: a child can clearly see objects far away, but those close up appear blurry)
Points to note when it comes to your child’s eye care:
● If there is a family history of amblyopia (lazy eye) or eye muscle problems, your child should see a paediatric ophthalmologist between the ages of 8–12 months
● If there is a family history of childhood cataracts or childhood glaucoma, your child should have an eye exam in the first few months of life to screen for this
Most eye problems in children can be treated without surgery, but some have to undergo surgical correction of their eye problems.
The paediatric specialists at City Eye Hospital have the special knowledge and technique required to manage and treat the full range of eye conditions in children.
