Eye exams can also reveal a range of other undiagnosed health issues, such as hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, as these conditions affect your vision as well.

WHO SHOULD GET EYE TESTS?

Everyone should get routine eye exams. How often this should be done is dependent on your age, general health and eye health:

● If you are in good health and have no known eye condition or vision problems, an eye exam every two to four years is sufficient

● If you have a family history of eye problems or have certain health problems, such as diabetes, an annual eye exam is ideal to catch any issues arising early

● If you have known eye conditions, such as glaucoma, you need to arrange with your eye doctor for ongoing eye exams

● The elderly should have an eye exam every two years as they are more at risk of eye conditions, such as cataracts

● Children below the age of three should have their eyes checked during their usual paediatric visits

WHAT DOES AN EYE TEST ENTAIL?

At City Eye Hospital, we perform a comprehensive eye exam to determine your overall eye health and screen for any eye conditions or diseases, including:

● glaucoma (a condition where there is pressure on your optic nerve that can lead to vision loss)

● cataracts (when the eyes become cloudy, affecting vision)

● diabetic retinopathy (damage to blood vessels in the eye due to high sugar levels)The tests during a routine eye exam are normally not painful or uncomfortable.
